Go-To Outfits Are Everything.

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

When I was dating, I had a go-to first date outfit. A dark pink ribbed Vanessa Bruno knit henley, black cami, Citizens of Humanity trouser flare jeans and pointy toe Gucci stilettos that I wish I had never given away. This made going on first dates much less painful- since given the choice, nine times out of ten I would have rather stayed home in my pajamas watching Dawson’s Creek. (Hey, it was 2003- Friday Night Lights wasn’t around yet.) But with the whole “what the F am I going to wear” part taken out of it, dating became much less stressful and I became much more open to meeting new people as a result.

While my first date days are long gone, the lesson learned from having that go-to outfit has stuck with me- and it really is invaluable. So, I have inaugurated a go-to “Saturday night double date” outfit.  See, Saturday night plans are rough lately- a full day with Alexa knocks me out. But in the interest of maintaining a life and staying sane (not to mention ordering in pizza from Vezzo two nights in a row would be embarrassing), Brian and I have made an effort to be good about making plans. But inevitably when 7pm rolls around, I throw a tantrum similar to the ones I used to throw before going out on a first date, begging Brian to let me cancel so we can watch TV and be in bed by 10.  Part of the anxiety definitely has to do with getting dressed- so now I have taken that out of the equation.

What is this outfit, you ask? It is comprised of favorite pieces from my closet that I always feel good in- and it is basic enough that when I want to switch it up a bit, all it takes is a few twirls of the curling iron, a makeup change-up and a little creative accessorizing.

Oh- and in case you are wondering- without fail, every time I motivate out oon a Saturday night, I end up being really thrilled I did. So any friends reading this who we have had dinner with recently- you can rest assured, we had a blast.

Hunter Dixon Ava Top, 7 For All Mankind Rachel Bell Bottom Jeans (blogged about here), Brian Atwood Maniac Pumps (blogged about here) and a big ol’ Dannijo cuff.

What is your a go-to outfit that makes a recurring occasion in your life less stressful? Do tell. I am always looking to add to my repertoire…

Maternity Style: My 2 Favorite D’s- Dannijo & DKNY

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Have to give this DKNY dress a shout out- been meaning to blog about it because it really is an incredible dress and it isn’t maternity, which is an added bonus. It is this stretchy jersey-esque but not jersey material- I want to call it tencel but think I may be totally making that up- and it is very fitted but the ruching makes that okay.  I wish I could find it online to link to a better photo, but no such luck.  Got it a couple months ago at the DKNY store on Madison Ave in NYC and I have a feeling it is going to be a life-long closet staple.

And of course- because it wouldn’t be an outfit post without Dannijo involved- this Raya necklace is one of my new favorites for the season. The more bored I get with trying to wear the same key pieces all the time in the last 7 weeks of this whole maternity style thing, the more important my giant Dannijo pieces become to every outfit.

Maternity Style: TopShop and Zara

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

This weekend I started shooting the second season of my MSN show, Beauty BFF. Long days but such a fun experience- and this time around, I was able to snag a stylist to help me pull together fun outfits. This was a totally new experience for me and I have to say, I am kind of spoiled for life now. Having someone go out and pull dozens of unique outfit options for you- things you would probably never think to try yourself- is quite a treat. Ewa Davis, my stylist, has such a great eye, and even though I may have gotten a tad cranky trying so many things on, it was WELL worth it when I showed up for each episode with a fab outfit on the hanger, ready to go, accessories and all. Seriously, this may top a professional blowout as the ultimate indulgence.

This outfit features a TopShop sweater (I had actually bought the exact same one in the non-maternity version a few months back- this one is from their maternity line and fits SO much better) and a super soft Zara vest. I am very into the monochromatic camel thing- reminds me of that look from the Chloe Fall 2010 ad campaign which I absolutely adore.  The tights are my usual Assets Maternity by Spanx ones, and of course, no outfit is complete without my beloved Gucci boots.

On the accessories front- as always, it is all about Dannijo. The Kamini earrings look like the most chic medieval torture devices ever (but note, even though they look like they would be really heavy, they are so light and easy to wear) and I also have on this beautiful bracelet that I need to post a better photo of soon because you all will love it.

MVP: Professional Hair, Makeup & My Favorite Dress

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

I meant to put this picture up a few weeks ago but things have been kind of crazy. Anyway- just close up evidence of what a difference professional hair and makeup make.

This is on-set at the shoot of some John Frieda advertorial segments we shot to go with my MSN series, Beauty BFF.  I interviewed celebrity stylist Harry Josh, who had recently come back from LA where he managed Rose Byrne’s mane for the Emmy red carpet. He could not have been nicer- so refreshing and great on camera that we ended the shoot hours ahead of schedule- a first! This day also marks the last time I fit in my most favorite Hunter Dixon dress- so for posterity, had to post.

And the necklace is my go-to from Dannijo- but you all already know this, I have written about it many times before. When I find pieces I like, I wear them to death. Who has the time to throw together outfits made of “second bests” when the most perfect items are right in front of you, right?

As Seen on TV: FOX 5 "Good Day New York" Fashion's Night Out Happenings

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

There are so many fun things happening in NYC (and around the country) on Friday night for Fashion’s Night Out. Here are some of the activities I plan on stopping by- and recommend you check them out as well:

First stop- before the evening’s events get under way- Oscar Blandi Salon at 545 Madison Ave at 55th Street for a $25 blow out. Because shopping is that much more fun with good hair.

Then, head over to Judith Ripka- she is having a huge party at her Madison Ave. Flagship Boutique (777 Madison Ave) complete with a photo booth on the sidewalk where shoppers can pop in and capture the moment. Stylists from Frederic Fekkai will help you primp for your close up. Oh- and every day through September 10th the brand is giving away a signature Judith Ripka ring valued at $700- enter here.

Over at Saks Fifth Avenue, Jade Jagger will be signing bottles of Guerlain’s classic Shalimar fragrance which she designed to celebrate the scent’s 85th anniversary. I am kind of obsessed with Jade Jagger’s “bohemian meets rock n’ roll” style, so sort of have to stop by to pick one of these up. I am a sucker for limited edition.

Stop by Henri Bendel to build a customized makeup palette with help from Jouer’s makeup stylists- including my favorite makeup maven, Jouer Founder & Creative Director Christina Zilber. And accessorize with DANNIJO- another personal favorite- at their “Friends Forever” pop up- Danielle & Jodie are previewing new styles and doling out style advice.

At Barney’s you can get your flip flop fix by snatching up a pair of limited edition Havaianas designed by Simon Doonan. And while you are making the purchase, you can ask Simon a question of your choosing. So get creative.  Before you head out, get glowing with a complimentary facial from ReVive.

Closet MVP- Dannijo.

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

We are in the process of renovating our bedroom and closet, so I had to pack up 95% of my clothes while this all goes down. Packing for a weekend trip is enough to send me into a tailspin, so one can easily imagine the panic that set in when my husband told me to select a few choice things to wear for the next 2 weeks. Heart palpitations ensued- I got all huffy and cranky, and ran around our 2X2 foot closet like a chicken with my head cut off for a good 30 minutes.

Then, I took a breath, and remembered my travel mantra- accessories, accessories and a few more accessories. Trina makeup bag in hand (using it for jewelry this week since my bathroom can stay in tact- yay for an easy makeup routine), one by one I started placing my Dannijo necklaces inside.

The Amal:

The Covina:

The Maverick:

I could go on for pages to be honest- but the bottom line is this: Once these babies were given the green light to be part of my 2 weeks worth of fashion stash, all I really needed to pack clothing-wise were basics- black dresses, white tees and my beloved J Brands, J. Crew skirts, Yummie Tummie tanks and my Current/Elliott jean jacket. And I don’t wake up in the morning in a cold sweat nervous that “perfect” outfit is in some storage facility in Long Island City. It really is just a Dannijo necklace away.
