As Seen on “Today Show”: Online Gift Destinations to Satisfy Hard-To-Shop-For Friends

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Gift shopping is stressful- especially when you are down to those last people on your list who, for one reason or another, are just impossible to please.

Here are some of my favorite sites to pleasantly surprise even the most persnickety person in your life- and you can see the entire segment HERE.

For The Friend Who Bores Quickly:
She unwraps the gift and squeals with joy. A week later, you spot it in the back of her closet. The new and improved of-the-month clubs (major trend right now) were made for her.

  • Birchbox: Beauty goodies from the best brands in the business arrive every 30 days, complete with tips and tricks.
  • Citrus Lane: A new mom and dad life saver, amazing must-haves for little ones picked by a panel of parenting pros.
  • Lollihop: A sampler of nutritious snacks, perfect to get 2012 off on a healthy foot.

For The Score Keeper:
This one takes careful note as to where the gift comes from- bag, tags and all. N0 sneaking by with off-price retail or flash sale site finds here.

  • Shop It To Me: Create a profile with favorite brands and retailers and you will be alerted daily via Shop It To Me’s salemail when relevant items have gone on sale- so you can score deep discounts on finds from Saks, Tory Burch, J. Crew, Thomas Pink and others. They will all arrive wrapped directly from the source- dressed to impress, so to speak.

For The One You Have Nothing In Common With:
Every year around this time you ask yourself- how am I possibly friends with this person?! Their interests are so different from yours, you wouldn’t even know where to begin. Best place to start? Websites featuring picks curated by tastemakers in all kinds of categories.

  • Joyus: If your friend is fashion or beauty obsessed, and you aren’t so much, this site, which features video sales showcasing  insider’s personal favorite things, should be your go-to resource. I share many of my must-have items on there, along with a stable of professional stylists, makeup mavens and fashion fanatics. Plus, the videos feature tips and styling advice- so they can become a resource for the recipient to make the most of their new gift.
  • OpenSky: I frequent this site for foodie and health nut gifts, and personally I am also obsessed with the finds from their parenting and organization curators.  If you want to know what people with all kinds of passions will want this season, log on to peruse and purchase picks from pros like Preston Bailey, Tom Colicchio, Alicia Silverstone, Padma Lakshmi and many more.

For The One Who Doesn’t Want What Everyone Else Has:
Trends be damned- for this person, uniqueness is everything. Scouting out limited edition quality finds is made infinitely more simple on a site when someone else does the hunting for you.

  • Of A Kind: Showcasing a different designer each week, Of A Kind commissions exclusive runs of anywhere from 5 to 50 units of any given item- and it arrives authenticated, numbered and signed by the creator. Plus they always share the back-story, so you can sound all smart and informed about the gift you give.

This Was a WEEK. And I Discovered Instagram.

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Oh my. Feeling like I am finally catching my breath from a super crazy week. Unfortunately, aforementioned breath is raspy since I officially ran myself ragged and now seem to be on the verge of a major cold situation. So it goes…

Here are some highlights:

MONDAY: Started the week over at Today Show to share coats under $100- so much fun, and even though I honestly never get nervous for the segment itself, the preparation and anticipation definitely takes a toll. But love every second of it- from getting the spot booked and having the excuse to go scout the market to seeing the models in their final looks with big smiles on their faces.

TUESDAY: Left the house at 5am for a Satellite Media Tour- which is kind of like a beauty and fashion tip marathon. I stand in one place (luckily behind a table so flats could be worn) and share tips on a given topic (this time around it was products benefitting Breast Cancer Awareness) over and over and over again with tv and radio stations all over the country. The nice thing is that by 11:30 it is all over- which meant I could take Alexa to her class at Appleseeds and still get a nice 5 hour stretch in the afternoon to get other work done.

WEDNESDAY: Somehow I thought it was a good idea to host a cocktail/shopping party at my apartment- this is the third one I have done, and every time I say never again, yet of course, there is always an again. I can’t help myself. 100 girls popped over to peruse the Fall collection from my beloved Hunter Dixon, pick up Birchbox goodies, get touch ups from Jouer Cosmetics, check out Shop It To Me and catch up with friends in the beauty/fashion/publishing worlds. So fun- of course, I am already thinking how I will pull it off again next year. Oh- and it was fun for Alexa too- she got to have a sleepover at the Carlton Hotel. Quite fancy. (Note: Since Ana Schechter took such gorgeous photos, I am saving them for a full party post, coming soon…)

THURSDAY: I am working on a very exciting project with Shutterfly (details to be shared in a later blog post when it officially launches) so at 7am sharp I was perched in a makeup chair on-set getting ready for a full day of shooting. This is the kind of stuff I love- so even though I was running on fumes and a 6 hour shoot became a 10 hour shoot (always the case- always), it was a blast. Part of that has to do with the company- great team all around, especially getting to work with Ana Schechter, who shot the pics of my party the night before, Erica Whelan, one of my go-to makeup artists, and the adorable Alison Lang, otherwise known as the stylist who saved my sanity. Love it when a project allows me to bring together my favorite people- in this business, often that makes the difference.

FRIDAY: Ahh, a day of rest. Still haven’t changed out of my pajamas (it is almost 3pm), busily sending thank you emails and notes to all of the amazing ladies that helped me make it through this week in one piece. And, in case you didn’t notice from above images- I have become Instagram obsessed. And as a result, I keep getting side-tracked playing around with all the filters and getting caught up in these images that make my life look about a thousand times cooler than it actually is. The way I feel today is best captured in this picture I took of Norms (and subsequently Instagrammed obviously) stationed at my feet since 8am.

Win It: A Birchbox Curated by Cynthia Rowley & Then Some

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

My love for Birchbox is no secret. The concept is genius, the girls behind it are amazing, and I can think of few things I adore more (when it comes to products, at least) than deluxe-sized minis from the best beauty brands out there.

The Birchbox team is always coming up with creative new ways to help beauty-loving ladies discover new must-haves, and for July they teamed up with Cynthia Rowley- letting her curate a Birchbox filled with her favorite finds.

Cynthia is one of the most creative people ever- I have known her for years, launched her fragrance back in the day actually, and her whimsical taste is something I am consistently in awe of. Which is why I can’t freaking wait to tear open my July delivery so I can see what she has selected.

And you too can share in the joy- even if you aren’t currently a Birchbox member (you should be, by the way). And not just for July, but for August and September as well. See, I happen to have five 3-month subscriptions to give away.

So, here is the deal:

To enter, just leave a comment below telling me what the best beauty sample you ever got was (and perhaps turned you into a lifelong fan of the product!) and I will pick 5 at random on July 5. You will get an email alerting you that you have won, and we will take it from there…(NOTE: THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED! WINNERS ARE BEING NOTIFIED VIA EMAIL ON JULY 6)

Note: If you are like me (very risk-averse) and would rather just KNOW that a delivery from Birchbox is going to arrive at your door, you can join the old fashioned way here.

Gotta Try It: Birchbox

Monday, September 6th, 2010

I do not take for granted how lucky I am to work in the beauty industry and have constant access to new product information and samples. That is kind of what propelled me to transition into the on-air expert gig- a desire to share all these cool things I get the scoop on with every other cosmetically-curious person out there.  And while I love passing around beauty goods I receive to friends & family to sample, I simply don’t have enough product- or time to send it- to everyone who I know would go nuts for it.

And this, my friends, is where Birchbox comes in.  Mollie Chen, who I absolutely adore and who’s opinion I respect completely, had been telling me about this concept that her friends were launching for awhile- and when she left her job as a magazine editor to go join them, I knew it had to be the real deal. And let me tell you- it is.

Sign up for this service for $10 a month, and you will receive a beautiful box with deluxe minis from some of the best brands in the biz (Nars, Cargo, Lipstick Queen, Benefit- all of my favorites.) It is the best way ever to try out new lines- and stock  your toiletries for traveling in style.

Hayley Barna, one of the Co-founders, said it best: “Women are overwhelmed by a crowded beauty landscape. Birchbox aims to give them the tools to become savvier beauty consumers and buy with ease and confidence.”

In addition to getting this very fun delivery at your door, as a Birchbox member you will have access to their amazing website which is packed with more info on their samples, makeup techniques, trend information and overall beauty insider info that everyone can use.

So, even though technically I am not sending you these samples from my personal stash- you can still thank me :)
