Virtual Shopping: Wedges

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Sure, I may break an ankle racing around the city sidewalks in them, but they have to be more comfortable than my usual sky-high heels, right? To round out my obsession with all things ’70s for Spring, I am lusting after the perfect pair of wedges- preferably with as much cork involved as possible.

Purchase of choice: Chloe Cork-Wedge Slingback Sandal

Why to buy: Most wedges I have found have ankle straps. And there are few things I despise as much as ankle straps. They can make even the most toned legs look like tree trunks. The way the front straps dip down in a V shape elongates the leg, I am a sucker for anything in Luggage.

How to wear: I think you can wear these puppies with almost anything. Wide leg denim is most obvious, but even with your old skinny jeans, the clunkiness of the shoe only serves to make your leg look thinner. And the gold buckle signals a need for lots of gold accessories- something to which I would happily oblige.

Virtual Shopping: Thread Social Maxi(ish) Dress

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

There is something about the effortless glam of a maxi dress that I obsess over. But at 5’2″, they often swallow me whole and I look like a little kid who played in her very chic mom’s closet.

However, since I refuse to wear flats with anything above the knee, and some “dress-necessary” occasions (such as fancy beach bbqs and outdoor cocktail parties) make high heels hazardous, every season I seek out a perfect long option.

Easier said than done. Until I came across this…

Purchase of choice: Thread Social Silk Crepe Strapless Gown

Why to buy: The olive green hue is season-less (I can definitely see topping this off with a camel moto jacket and boots come fall) and the elastic waist can be positioned to sit wherever you feel it is most flattering on your frame.  And it is that good kind of strapless- the kind that won’t pinch under the arms creating little fat rolls where you definitely don’t want them. And the opening in the front shows the skinniest part of the leg- and won’t overpower a petite (read: short) stature.

How to wear: Keep it clean and simple- I would just go with a thin gold chain necklace and/or oversized yet still delicate hoop earrings. Hair in a high ponytail to draw attention to the collarbones, and definitely a creamy nude gloss on the lips. For shoes, maybe a dressy raffia thong style or a chunky wood platform with luggage brown leather straps.

Virtual Shopping: ’70s Chic Jeans

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

There are two major reasons I am not currently updating my closet for Spring:

1- Baby weight. About 15 pounds of it that I am determined to lose, and I refuse to give myself the false sense of security that a wardrobe in my current size would provide.

2- It is freaking freezing out. I just can’t wrap my head around peeling off 5 layers of sweaters, scarves, hats and gloves to try on short sleeved dresses and open toe shoes.

This however does not mean I am not THINKING about what those key purchases are going to be, and as such, I have decided to kick off a new series on my blog- Virtual Shopping. I think of it as my wardrobe wish list- and when the stars (otherwise known as my waistline and the weather report) align, it is what I will shop from.

First up? Jeans. Obviously I must indulge in the 1970′s inspired higher waist, super flare leg denim trouser craze. And even though the look may seem daunting, if you find the right pair, this style can be insanely flattering. Elongates the leg, gives shape to the thigh, and sucks in the belly. Genius.

Purchase of choice? J Brand 923 Babe in Starless – $187

Why to buy? Dark color, high but not uncomfortably high waist, and “Power Stretch Denim” (whatever that is, it sounds good to me)

How to wear?: Short sleeve, fitted fine-knit turtlenecks (preferably in shades of maroon, navy or chocolate), long Dannijo gold necklaces and chunky platforms. Or flowy floral print silk blouses. All tucked in, of course.
