Mom Notes: Vacation. Or Whatever You Call Traveling Somewhere Nice With a Baby.

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

To Bring, Or Not To Bring (the baby)? When it comes to vacation, that is the question.

We brought her.

My husband starts a new job in a couple weeks, and in the interest of enjoying this time off together as much as possible, he decided it was high time for our first Falik Family Vacation. After much research and debating, we opted to check out the Viceroy Anguilla. And I am so glad we did. I am also glad we brought Alexa- although I am not going to lie, having a baby in tow drastically changes every single notion I used to have about relaxing weeks lazing beachside.  Full disclosure- we were fortunate enough to be able to bring our nanny along. Even so- having a crazily curious and unpredictable almost-toddler wandering around a very un-child-proofed space and waking up at the crack of dawn under the same roof is just, well, different.

Oh- and the night before we left, I accidentally closed a door with her hand in it. Subsequently, we watched the Superbowl from the emergency room. And Alexa made her entrance at the resort with her hand in a sling. But that is a story for another day.

Anyway- here are my top 5 takeaways from our first week-long beach vacation with baby:

1- Thank GOODNESS for Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids Sunblock Spray. The Faliks are a fair people- when it comes to skin tone at least- and Alexa is squirmy. This saved us.

2- It is worth lugging a pool float (buy it, pack it and blow it up when you arrive.) Being able to put her in it and not be a nervous wreck every second in the pool was worth the extra suitcase (which we also filled with an assortment of other random toys that came very much in handy.) Plus, out of the water, it became one of her favorite distraction toys- and by the transitive property to parenting, ours too.

3- Soft sand is the best baby-proofing around. We were able to spend much more time on the beach than I had anticipated once I realized she would never crack her head open toppling over into the insanely powdery sand on the Viceroy’s perfectly manicured property.  I also got to take a few breaths when we buried her from the waist-down in the sand and watch her actually stay in one place for more than 30 seconds. My idea of economical babysitting. Kidding, kidding.

4- Buffet breakfasts are a baby’s best friend. Alexa joined us every morning for an endless parade of fruits and pastries, each new thing making her face light up and allowing Brian and I enough time to read the New York Times Digest (the only time I ever really read the Times, beyond the Thursday and Sunday Styles pages) is on vacation when the package it for me in a concise little packet.

5- Make sure that wherever you are going can provide a full size crib so eventually the baby starts feeling somewhat at home, and rent a stroller. Our Snap-and-Go carseat thingie just was not going to cut it. Long walks are so much more enjoyable for everyone involved (and I include other resort guests in this group who otherwise would have their afternoon naps interrupted by a howling child) plus the sun protection from a real deal stroller- as opposed to a dinky travel one- is infinitely better.

I applaud Brian on making the perfect destination choice- they have this amazing “kids club” with every book and Melissa & Doug toy Alexa could dream of, and every single person there made us feel welcome (as opposed to the lepers I most certainly made families with little kids feel like whenever we stumbled across them in our pre-baby vacationing days.) Oh, and the kid’s menu at one of the restaurants can only be viewed on one of those old-school View Finder toys- remember the ones, you look inside and click through 3D-like images?- very nice touch.

Viceroy Anguilla has quickly ascended to the top of my vacation destination list and I hope to be so lucky as to return there again. And again. And again. And by again, I mean tomorrow. But I know, I know- good things come to those who wait, patience is a virtue, yada yada yada.

My Shop It To Me Pop Up Shop. Treat Yourself. It’s Tuesday.

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

In high pressure situations, my brain has a tendency to want to go the other way. Like, before my wedding, when the pressure was on to get skinny, I gained weight. Same with pre-Spring Break shape-ups in college. Around the holidays, with all the pressure to buy the perfect thing for someone else, I end up buying many perfect things- for myself. Which is why when Shop It To Me asked me to curate a pop up boutique of my favorite fashions (all on sale, mind you!) for their Treat Yourself Tuesday campaign, I couldn’t resist.

Putting this together was quite enjoyable (dare I say, too enjoyable as my credit card bill this month will vouch)- every item you see is something I want in my closet (if I don’t already own it) because they fulfill my three fashion rules- timeless, easy to wear and very versatile.

Hope you will check out my Treat Yourself Tuesday Pop Up Boutique and treat yourself to a little (or a big) something. The boutique will only last until MIDNIGHT TONIGHT (Tuesday, 12/20)- so hop to it. If you haven’t found the perfect present for everyone on your list just yet, maybe spoiling yourself is just the distraction you need.

Beauty Confession: Adult Acne. Good Times.

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

I feel naked.

Usually my shower ledge, pictured above, is packed with cleansers and moisturizers- old favorites and the latest and greatest- for me to sample at my leisure all in the name of research.

But- guess what? For the first time in my life, I have acne. Yep- awesome. Went to the derm because I figured it had to be a rash of some sort on my chin. While I have many beauty issues, my skin isn’t one of them. It was all part of my shtick- good skin, not so good hair.

Until now.

Apparently, the acne on my chin (which I had come to fondly refer to as my “zit beard”) was getting worse due to irritation from products I had been using so he instructed me to go on a strict diet of Cetaphil. That and a couple prescription creams he wanted me to try. My routine has never been so bare bones.

I have to say- getting back to basics feels kinda nice.

Limited Edition and Lovely: Tarte Picture Perfect Eyelash Curler

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

I never really got into the whole lash curler thing. To me, it always seemed like an unnecessary extra step when I could bend my lashes just fine with my mascara wand. But the more makeup artists I work with, the more I realize I am sadly mistaken and curling my lashes is a 2 second way to open up my eyes. So, time to get a lash curler.

And almost as if Tarte heard my beauty revelation, they launched this limited-edition completely crave-worthy Picture Perfect eyelash curler, knowing that if there is one thing I can’t resist, it is bedazzled beauty products. As much as I try to get away from my formerly overly-girly self as the years go by and my tastes mature (well, kind of mature), there is something about a crystal-encrusted beauty item that I simply can not resist.

The curler itself is great quality- all the bells and whistles you need- including a purple padding inside the device that makes it easy to see every lash poke through so you know no lash has been left behind.

But at the end of the day- it really is all about those sparkly purple details, don’t you think?

Oh- and I must point out- the price is hard to resist as well. $15 a pop. Making it the perfect go-to Secret Santa or stocking stuffer gift. Because anyone can use it- and everyone will love it. Or at least I know I would.

Love It: Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm

Friday, November 12th, 2010

I was never very good in art class. Coloring inside the lines was never really my thing (read into that however you wish…) Had I known that honing these artistic skills could later in life help me to master my makeup, I may have tried a little harder. Given my penchant for quickly swiping on lip color, usually sans mirror, lip stains have typically proven dangerous. I love the color, but hate the risk.

As embarrassed as I am to admit this, the commercial for the new Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm piqued my interest. I mean, I have been in the beauty industry for 10 years, I should know better than to be swayed by well-produced ad campaigns featuring born-perfect celebs, but I am only human I suppose. And the product, I am happy to report, didn’t disappoint.

The color assortment is amazing (I love Passion, Crave and Gothic the best personally) and the stain is delivered via a marker-like tip that is nice and narrow and fairly mistake-proof. Even for an art class miscreant like me. A true testament to the staying power? If you want a couple seconds and then put on the balm, the color doesn’t even rub off on the clear balm stick.

At under $10 a pop, I think they are a definite drugstore do next time you are looking for a quick face update. Perfect winter blah pick-me-up…

Maternity Style: A Perfect Thread Social Dress (Yes, Another One)

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

If I could wear this dress 2-3 times a week without getting suspicious stares, I would.

The dress is Thread Social- as you all know by now, one of my go-to labels, and happens to be the coziest jersey fabric ever. It definitely benefits from the definition of a thick belt (in my opinion these days, however, belting makes everything better), so I threw on a great basic belt I picked up at H&M a few weeks ago.  Then, went with patterned Assets by SPANX tights (for anyone ever pregnant in the fall/winter, I recommend ordering at least 10 pairs, you will live in them, they feel great on and are nice and opaque) and my new and very beloved Be&D Whitbey boots. So as not to compete with the belt, I resisted the temptation to go with a big chunky necklace and instead wore two gorgeous, delicate Lia Sophia matte black metal with dark gray crystal ball strands.

Maternity Style: Thread Social Bow Dress

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Typically I am not a fan of non-maternity dresses that aren’t predominantly jersey or some sort of stretchy material because they can be borderline potato-sack-esque. I fell in love with this Thread Social dress when I featured it in a trend segment I did for LXTV- and figured what the heck- I would go up about 4 sizes and get one for myself. I love the print, I of course love that there is a bow situation, and I tend to love anything and everything Thread Social.

Paired with a my beloved J. Crew skinny belt, it actually works quite well as a maternity dress. Without the belt, in all fairness- not so much…Black tights, my go-to furry boots and minimal accessories (the bow really is all you need, otherwise it can feel like too much- and I have achieved what I think (hope!) is a rotation-worthy maternity look. Agree?

Maternity Style: Nuka Maternity Twisted Dress

Friday, October 15th, 2010

I am officially obsessed with Nuka Maternity. Every thing I have tried from the brand fits perfectly- nice and fitted without being tight, and constructed so as to show one’s baby bump in the most flattering way possible.

The Nuka Maternity Twisted Dress is my new favorite- wore it this morning to film a segment for NY1 and can’t wait to wear it again. Ended up pairing it with black leggings and brown knee-high boots (changed after this pic was taken- had to run around too much to go stiletto today)- somehow all together, black, brown and grey work- who knew?!

Beauty BFF Viewer Q & A: Mascara Mishaps

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Q: My question is about mascara. I seem to always end up with “raccoon eyes” no matter how waterproof the mascara claims to be. Is there a way of preventing this? What mascara do you think is the most smudge or waterproof?

A: Hmmm, that can be quite frustrating, I have definitely been there before.  Onepotential pitfall- are you applying concealer to your under eye area right up to the lash line? You want to avoid doing that. The oils in the concealer can come into contact with the mascara on your lashes and cause it to run and smudge. Apply concealer about an inch under the eye, and then blend up. This way you avoid having too much product in the danger zone where it could cause makeup meltdown, but you can still get ample coverage if you need it.

A new mascara that I recently started experimenting with which has proven itself to be quite smudge proof is Lashes to Die For THE MASCARA from Peter Thomas Roth. Formulated to help lashes look longer, thicker and fuller without clumping, smudging or flaking, the innovative brush features two specialized zones for targeted length and volume. It layers really nicely- so when I want more drama, I can easily get it.  I have been applying it at 8 in the morning, and when I finally make it home 14 hours later, there is nary a smudge in sight. I am also a big fan of L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara- you can read more about that here- it is a great drugstore buy. For maximum staying power, I suggest minimal layering- two coats max will give you lush lashes and longevity.
