A Splurge Worth Every Single Cent: Brian Atwood Maniac Pumps

Monday, June 20th, 2011

About 10 years ago, I bought myself a pair of round toe Marc Jacobs pumps in red patent leather. It was one of my first big purchases when I was earning my own money right out of college, and I remember agonizing over the decision- if I was going to blow a paycheck on a pair of shoes, should they be as practical as possible (i.e. black)?

But in what I can perhaps credit as my first instinctually fashion savvy moment, I went for the red, and wore them to death. Ever since I begrudgingly had to retire them for good, I have searched for the perfect replacement.

When I saw out that my beloved Brian Atwood Maniac heel was available in red at Saks, I ordered them immediately. See, I wear my nude pair almost daily (when I travel it is the only pair of shoes I bring, which alone makes them worth their weight in gold), so even though a second pair was a splurge, I had to rely on my now trusty fashion instinct that it was a splurge worth making.

And, for the record, I was right.

A good pair of red shoes (or purple, or green for that matter- color is everything when it comes to footwear) will maximize your existing wardrobe with minimal effort.  And that, my friends, is priceless.

OH! Before I forget (and sorry, I know this is off-topic, but…) I set up a Feedburner for my blog so you can get my posts delivered to your inbox- if you have a second, would love for you to sign up HERE.

"Babymoon" with my BFF- The Lodge at Woodloch

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

First up- to be clear on something- I can’t stand the term “babymoon.” It makes me feel physically ill- like I ate way too much cheese in one sitting. I refuse to use the term to describe the trip I am taking with my husband later this month- but something about it when referring to my girls weekend with my long time best friend Nicole feels sarcastic and kind of okay.

We treated ourselves to 2 nights at the Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, Pennsylvania- and it was pretty perfect. A beautiful 2 1/2 hour drive from NYC, I will venture to say that facility-wise, it is nicer than Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA and much less expensive. Here are some highlights:

The Activities: We did a trail hike on Saturday morning and loved it. It was challenging, but in a good way, and quite scenic. Our guides were so nice, we never felt unattended to, and in the van ride back they gave us trail mix- added bonus :) Later that afternoon we took a Restorative Yoga class- the teacher was a little thrown off by the fact that we were pregnant which I can understand- so it ended up being more of a make-it-up-as-you-go session- we had the class to ourselves. On Sunday, we took Dance Fusion cardio (Nicole  is a big fan of letting her inner diva go wild via classes like this, so she talked me into it) followed by Stretch & Tone. Enjoyed them both- at 50 minutes each, they flew by and while they weren’t terribly challenging, it was a nice way to get moving.

The Spa: We each signed up for a Pre-Natal Massage- and mine was divine. The spa facilities are gorgeous- not over the top but pristine and well-staffed. If (or when!) I go back, I will definitely take more advantage of their services.

The Food: Delicious. Small portions but great options, plus at breakfast and lunch there was a buffet so you could easily create your own meal (the menu options for these meals stayed the same daily- so I can imagine if people stay for a week, it could be tedious). We definitely weren’t dainty when it came to meals- but actually never felt stuffed or uncomfortable which I attribute to the quality of the ingredients and lack of excess salt or sugar.

The Verdict: A perfect place for a girl’s getaway or a mother-daughter weekend. I love that it isn’t too stringent- unlike Canyon Ranch, the cocktails are flowing and while I wasn’t able to indulge this time around, it is nice to know next time I could throw back a martini should I so desire. You can make it as spa-like as you feel like you want it to be- and personally, when it comes to travel, I always appreciate options.

MVP(s) of My Makeup Bag: Travel Must-Haves

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

This week is a crazy one for me- traveling to 4 cities in 4 days to do local television appearances. I actually really have come to love traveling solo- over the past 4 years of doing this, I have come to know my cities well and made many local media friends that I get to catch up with every time I come to town. Another fun outcome of all this travel has been the innate ability to pack a tightly edited makeup bag with products that do the trick on-air (most stations I go to ask me to arrive makeup ready) and also can be used with a lighter touch for travel and off-hours.

So- what made the cut this trip? Read on to find out…

Travel Beauty Essential: Atlanta

Monday, August 9th, 2010

August is always a crazy month for me- usually filled with travels around the country sharing Fall finds. Currently, I am in Atlanta (at the airport actually, heading to Miami shortly) and, figured that it may be fun to share with you guys my on-the-road must-haves. They tend to change depending on the city and the circumstances- but this time around, the winner is Pssssst Instant Spray Shampoo.

See, my visit to Atlanta was two-fold- I had my cousin’s wedding Sunday night, and an appearance on FOX Good Day Atlanta on Monday morning. So, I needed to pull off 2 hairstyles- and refused (as any sensible girl should do, I think) to wash my hair in between. Who has the time or the energy? Not me.

I have love for many a dry shampoo- this is one of many that I keep in my arsenal. But for travel, they have the most adorable minis, and the scent is always subtle and clean. For the wedding, my focus was more on the roots to get some lift before pinning my hair into a messy low ponytail. For TV, it was all about creating volume- the camera may add 10 pounds from the forehead down, but for some reason, it always flattens out hair. Go figure.

The build up with Pssssst is minimal- and the effect is noticeable. The perfect combo for a dry shampoo, don’t you think?

Would love to hear your favorite dry shampoos- I am always looking for new ones to try. Want to share? Please do. Secrets secrets are no fun…You know how the rhyme goes…

Today Show 7/24: What To Pack

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Hope you guys were able to catch my Today Show segment sharing my personal packing essentials. Over the past 5 years of sharing beauty and fashion finds all over the country, I have been lucky (well, in most cases!) to have hundreds of changes to hone my short-trip packing skills. And here are some of my tried and true stand-bys:

  • An oversized Sir Alistair Rai scarf that I use as a blanket on the plane, a sarong on the beach, a dress for post-beach activities and a halter paired with jeans for a night out. Oh- and of course, it makes a great scarf too- love it with a white burnout tee and J Brand 10″ skinnies.
  • Caftans are a huge trend right now-  but when it comes to travel, they are timeless. Right now I love the Completely Me by Liz Lange Long Caftan worn as is to the beach by day (hey, I work in beauty, I gotta cover everything up from the sun- it is in my professional code of conduct or something!) and then, cinched with, yes, you guessed it- a J. Crew Skinny Metallic Belt for sophisticated glamour by night.
  • The more giant Dannijo necklaces I pack, the less clothes I have to bring. They change every outfit you pair them with- and many can also be looped around the wrist and worn as big statement bracelets. I have said it before, and I will say it again- I love love love Dannijo.
  • Any fabric with stretch is going to travel well. Spiegel has a jersey collection that I really like- packs up small, doesn’t wrinkle, and they have an Infinity Dress that is pretty damn cool. On the show this morning, I wore my travel-wear surprise- a Jay Godfrey dress that doesn’t look like it would be the most comfortable, wrinkle free thing in my closet, but it is. I bring it on every work trip I have and never have to so much as faux steam it in the bathroom- it always arrives looking freshly pressed.
  • For packing tools- of course, you gotta have the Victorinox Travel Gear Packmaster Envelopes. I swear by ‘em, you can read more here. Tissue paper is also key- I save it from beauty deliveries I get solely to use when packing to wrap around anything that could potentially wrinkle to keep creases at bay. Simple but effective. Then- you gotta throw in some Shout Wipes and Gal Pal deodorant erasers- nobody wants to have to pack extra just in case you encounter a stain (which I inevitably always do.) These are my version of Fashionable Traveler’s Insurance- and they have not failed me yet.

Ode To: J. Crew Skinny Metallic Belts

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

What a difference a skinny belt can make. Specifically, a metallic skinny belt. It doesn’t HAVE to be metallic, of course. But if you want versatility, it is the way to go.

I was reminded of my love for J. Crew skinny belts twice today. First when getting dressed this morning. My husband looked at my Haute Hippie Tuxedo Shirt Dress and said I looked like I had a sack on. Two seconds later, belt secured around my waist- he loved the outfit. Go figure. Literally. Ha ha.

A few hours later, my producer at Today Show called to see if I could do a segment Friday morning about packing essentials.

Car as Style Statement- My Ford Fiesta Experience

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

In my everyday life, I receive tons of info on makeup, skincare, accessories, celeb favorites and the like- but rarely to I get a chance to talk about cars. And, since I live in Manhattan and have probably been behind the wheel less than 10 times in the past 10 years, cars have not been top of my radar as of late. However, all that changed when I was asked by Ford to participate in a panel they were hosting to talk about style trends and how they relate to automobiles.

Sheryl Connelly, the Global Trends and Futuring Manager at Ford, moderated the panel and said something so interesting when we started talking about how cars and style relate: Think of  your car as the most expensive suit you will ever own. And when you think about it- it is all about the way you present yourself- and the choices you make are so reflective of the “personal brand” you want to promote.

The entire experience was fascinating- I had always looked as cars more as utility-meets-status symbol purchases, and it is kind of fun to think about them also as a personal style statement. The Ford Fiesta comes in bold colors- my favorite is, of course, magenta. Pretty much anything in my closet would look great leaned up against the side of that car. Oh- and the cars have ambient lighting too- a big beauty plus, I must say.

Who knew that Ford was so in touch with our vanity? I admit it, I’m so vain, I think this car is about me :)

When It Comes to Travel, I Like to Fancy Myself a Pro…

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Starting in August I will embark on another one of my seemingly never-ending travel runs, sharing Fall beauty favorites with viewers all over the country. Since I have a self-diagnosed packing disorder, I am already in a panic about what I am going to bring- need to take into consideration a million things- like what looks good with each station’s set, what fits the style of the city I am visiting and most importantly, what can be stuffed in a suitcase and arrive unscathed?

These packing envelopes from Victorinox are my secret sanity saver- I remember when I discovered them while killing time before a flight in San Diego a year or two ago- it was like I heard birds chirping or something.  They keep me organized- I use one for gym clothes and pjs, one for casual clothes and one for on-air outfits- and they make packing and unpacking every 20 hours almost a breeze.

If you are a frequent flier, I highly recommend.
