Club Monaco, Fresh, Susan Miller & Me: December 1 in NYC

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

When brands I love invite me to be a part of their events. I get really excited. I have a Sally Field moment-you know, from her 1984 Oscars speech that is still often quoted- “You like me! Right now, you like me!” So when Fresh and Club Monaco asked me to be the style expert at their Sugar & Cashmere holiday event on Wednesday, December 1st, it was an easy answer: I will be there with bells (and a cashmere beret and Fresh Sugar Plum lip treatment) on.

If you are in NYC on Wednesday, December 1st- come by! There will be cookies, there will be cocktails, there will be astrology (courtesy of renowned Susan Miller who I am quickly learning has QUITE the impassioned following!) and best of all for a shopping fanatic like myself, there will be gift ideas galore. Susan is handpicking presents you can give based on astrological sign, which is one way to focus your list for the season. And I will be there to help you shop for yourself and for others based on trends, personal style, or simply the items I am obsessing over at the moment that anyone would love to unwrap.

THE DETAILS:
Wednesday, December 1, 2010
6-8pm
Club Monaco at 21st and 5th Avenue

Beauty Cheat Sheet: Because You Asked

Monday, November 29th, 2010

I have spent the past few days with family and friends in Houston, Texas- and inevitably, everyone asks me the same question: What beauty products do I need to go buy immediately?

Well, this visit they also ask me if we have a name picked out for the baby yet (yes, but not telling you) so, the one thing I can indulge the lovely ladies of Houston in is my short list of makeup must-haves of the moment.

Figured as a reminder to them (since copious amounts of wine and carbs and a list committed to memory do not often a productive shopping trip make, this I have learned the hard way) and a helping guide to the rest of you, I may as well post the top 5 for all to see:

1- Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint: If you want to go tinted moisturizer, this is the one. I wear Golden- it is fairly universal to be honest- and I adore it.

2- Nars Sheer Glow Foundation: When you need more coverage (which these days I often do), this is truly amazing.

3- Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Liner: Have raved before, will rave again.

4- Ultraflesh Panthera Mascara: Robin Coe-Hutshing and Nicole Ostoya are the coolest women I know in the beauty biz, and their insanely amazing new mascara formula is everything I would expect from them and more.

5- Smith’s Rosebud Salve in a Tube: I am substituting this for the Stila  highlighter that I recommended to a few friends over dinner Friday night only because the highlighter isn’t out yet and this salve is a great beauty bargain. Since I refuse to NOT line my lids and always go heavy on the mascara right now, for daytime, I try and keep my lips nice and neutral, and this is my go-to.

Let ME Help YOU Update Your Wardrobe at Lord & Taylor Tonight…

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Fall is always my favorite fashion season- and this time around especially- with all the cozy knits, shearling, lady-like details- ahh, the damage I could do…Tonight at the NEW(ly redesigned) Lord & Taylor flagship, I will be talking about fall trends with one of my favorite magazines, People StyleWatch, and helping guests update their wardrobe for the season.

The second floor, where I will be hanging out, is filled with amazing brands- Trina Turk, Shoshanna, BCBG, French Connection, Juicy Couture to name a few. When I went by to pull trends the other day, I was like a kid in a candy store. And since I can’t indulge in non-maternity fashion this season, I will live vicariously through all of you- so come on down and say hi!

Oh- and if my company isn’t enough to entice you, Bobbi Brown makeup artists are giving touch ups and T3 is doing hair. And there are lots of fun freebies.

Hope to see you there!

"Babymoon" with my BFF- The Lodge at Woodloch

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

First up- to be clear on something- I can’t stand the term “babymoon.” It makes me feel physically ill- like I ate way too much cheese in one sitting. I refuse to use the term to describe the trip I am taking with my husband later this month- but something about it when referring to my girls weekend with my long time best friend Nicole feels sarcastic and kind of okay.

We treated ourselves to 2 nights at the Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, Pennsylvania- and it was pretty perfect. A beautiful 2 1/2 hour drive from NYC, I will venture to say that facility-wise, it is nicer than Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA and much less expensive. Here are some highlights:

The Activities: We did a trail hike on Saturday morning and loved it. It was challenging, but in a good way, and quite scenic. Our guides were so nice, we never felt unattended to, and in the van ride back they gave us trail mix- added bonus :) Later that afternoon we took a Restorative Yoga class- the teacher was a little thrown off by the fact that we were pregnant which I can understand- so it ended up being more of a make-it-up-as-you-go session- we had the class to ourselves. On Sunday, we took Dance Fusion cardio (Nicole  is a big fan of letting her inner diva go wild via classes like this, so she talked me into it) followed by Stretch & Tone. Enjoyed them both- at 50 minutes each, they flew by and while they weren’t terribly challenging, it was a nice way to get moving.

The Spa: We each signed up for a Pre-Natal Massage- and mine was divine. The spa facilities are gorgeous- not over the top but pristine and well-staffed. If (or when!) I go back, I will definitely take more advantage of their services.

The Food: Delicious. Small portions but great options, plus at breakfast and lunch there was a buffet so you could easily create your own meal (the menu options for these meals stayed the same daily- so I can imagine if people stay for a week, it could be tedious). We definitely weren’t dainty when it came to meals- but actually never felt stuffed or uncomfortable which I attribute to the quality of the ingredients and lack of excess salt or sugar.

The Verdict: A perfect place for a girl’s getaway or a mother-daughter weekend. I love that it isn’t too stringent- unlike Canyon Ranch, the cocktails are flowing and while I wasn’t able to indulge this time around, it is nice to know next time I could throw back a martini should I so desire. You can make it as spa-like as you feel like you want it to be- and personally, when it comes to travel, I always appreciate options.

Maternity Style: Tucker Dress at Piperlime

Friday, September 10th, 2010

I am on a mission to figure out how to dress with my ever-expanding belly- so in an effort to scare myself in to putting together great looks, I have decided to share “Maternity Style” photos a couple times a week. It is like those people years ago on Dateline I think it was who lost weight because they were told if they didn’t, they would have to broadcast photos of themselves in bathing suits in Times Square. But one thing I can PROMISE- no bathing suits here. That would just be rude.

Anyway- I broke out my most favorite maternity look to date yesterday in the form of this non-maternity section Tucker dress I picked up at Piperlime.

All I did to make it work for me was move the belt from the waist up a few inches to create an empire style. Yeah, it was a tad short (paired with my most favorite knee-high brown Gucci boots I live in every Fall- scored at a major sale at Bergdorf 3 years ago to balance out the expsosure of too much skin) so in a month or so I will probably need to throw brown tights on with it. But I love the colors, love the silk (it is slightly more substantial than most silky dresses, which is key for me- anything too delicate freaks me out) and love that I can wear it long after this baby bump situation.

My Two Cents: KIND Snacks Minis are Insanely Good

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Portion control is not my strong suit. Especially when it comes to something as damn good as a KIND bar. Hence, I am convinced that the new KIND minis were made for me. Or at the very least, people like me.

I am by no means a super healthy eater (I wish I was, but it just isn’t in my DNA) however pulling one of these out of my bag makes me feel like maybe, just maybe, I am fooling everyone. And I have always been a huge proponent of the “fake it til you make it” school of success.

Around 100 calories each and really quite satisfying (which says a lot considering I am four months pregnant and known to have an appetite the size of a pro football player anyway), I have to give these little guys a shout out. Because if you are trying to do the whole healthy thing part time at least- a full size bar is not ideal. Because let’s not kid ourselves- we are probably still going to enjoy a real meal soon after.

What are your favorite healthy snack bars? Do tell- I am always looking for new one to add to my arsenal.

Germ-a-phobe Chic: CLEAN Anti-Bacterial Hand Cream

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

I am not a germ-a-phobe at all- probably to a fault. But in an effort not to end up with that dreaded end-of-summer cold, I have decided to become one. Well- that decision could also have had something to do with this new product from CLEAN and the fact that I was looking for an excuse to stock up on it. See, the truth is, the last thing I need in my handbag was another travel-size hand cream. But this one really is different…

Each application of this unscented  cream covers your hands in what I like to think of as invisible germ-killing gloves that stay on for 4 hours- so unlike those instant gel formulas out there, the protection lasts. There is a patented SafetyDerm technology that suspends the germ fighting agents in airy, light layers of moisturizer.  That moisturizer happens to be packed with Grape Seed Oil, Avocado Oil and Jojoba Oil- three of my favorite hydrating ingredients.

I also like this because if you shake someone’s hand and then they sneeze and you get freaked out, you can just pretend to be applying hand cream as opposed to offending them by blatantly pulling out hand sanitizer and all but screaming in their face “You are gross.”

Today Show 7/24: What To Pack

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Hope you guys were able to catch my Today Show segment sharing my personal packing essentials. Over the past 5 years of sharing beauty and fashion finds all over the country, I have been lucky (well, in most cases!) to have hundreds of changes to hone my short-trip packing skills. And here are some of my tried and true stand-bys:

  • An oversized Sir Alistair Rai scarf that I use as a blanket on the plane, a sarong on the beach, a dress for post-beach activities and a halter paired with jeans for a night out. Oh- and of course, it makes a great scarf too- love it with a white burnout tee and J Brand 10″ skinnies.
  • Caftans are a huge trend right now-  but when it comes to travel, they are timeless. Right now I love the Completely Me by Liz Lange Long Caftan worn as is to the beach by day (hey, I work in beauty, I gotta cover everything up from the sun- it is in my professional code of conduct or something!) and then, cinched with, yes, you guessed it- a J. Crew Skinny Metallic Belt for sophisticated glamour by night.
  • The more giant Dannijo necklaces I pack, the less clothes I have to bring. They change every outfit you pair them with- and many can also be looped around the wrist and worn as big statement bracelets. I have said it before, and I will say it again- I love love love Dannijo.
  • Any fabric with stretch is going to travel well. Spiegel has a jersey collection that I really like- packs up small, doesn’t wrinkle, and they have an Infinity Dress that is pretty damn cool. On the show this morning, I wore my travel-wear surprise- a Jay Godfrey dress that doesn’t look like it would be the most comfortable, wrinkle free thing in my closet, but it is. I bring it on every work trip I have and never have to so much as faux steam it in the bathroom- it always arrives looking freshly pressed.
  • For packing tools- of course, you gotta have the Victorinox Travel Gear Packmaster Envelopes. I swear by ‘em, you can read more here. Tissue paper is also key- I save it from beauty deliveries I get solely to use when packing to wrap around anything that could potentially wrinkle to keep creases at bay. Simple but effective. Then- you gotta throw in some Shout Wipes and Gal Pal deodorant erasers- nobody wants to have to pack extra just in case you encounter a stain (which I inevitably always do.) These are my version of Fashionable Traveler’s Insurance- and they have not failed me yet.

Glam Delivery: Tom Ford Private Blend Lipsticks

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I am not going to lie- it is fun to come home at night after a long day of work to receive bags full of beauty products from my doorman (no, he doesn’t buy them for me, but he does sign for all the messengers.) As much as I want to rip through the packages the second I get home, some (most) nights I am just too exhausted and I wait for the weekend to roll around so I can relish in the excitement and experimentation.

When this gorgeous giant white box of Tom Ford Private Blend Lipstick arrived, however, it was on a night when I was especially beat.  One of those nights where the entire walk home, I was planning what pjs I was going to put on and what blanket I was going to curl up with the second I walked through the front door.

All that was forgotten the second I saw this.  Immediately, I set up camp in my bathroom and tried on a variety of the shades- quickly settling on a favorite- Pink Dusk (image borrowed from London Makeup Girl- her nails are much nicer than mine!)

The color is rich and opaque- but not that heavy matte that scared many of us away from lipsticks in the first place. It is sophisticated and subtle- two things I try to be when I remember :)

One of these days, I will get my husband to take of pic of me wearing it and I’ll add it to this post, in case you are curious to see it in action. (Also- side note- not sure where you can get these online just yet- having a hard time finding, but when I do, will update accordingly.)

A Tribute to YSL Tributes

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Yes, I know they are really expensive. And they don’t appear to be very practical. But they really are the most amazing shoes I have ever owned- which explains why I have amassed 4 different colors of the same style in 2 years. They are comfy- really, they are! Nobody believes me but I swear- I have run through many an airport in them.

The best footwear investment out there, I can promise you that. I can’t pick stocks- but  I can most certainly pick shoes.

(Sorry- I know this post is short, but hopefully still informative :) )
