First Time for Everything: Organic Avenue Cleanse

Friday, August 5th, 2011

I wish I was a health nut, but I’m not. I go through phases- like, as in having a salad for lunch, then when cupcakes land on my desk at 3pm, the phase has ended- but I have never been hard core committed to clean eating. Sure, I want to be healthy and, yeah, I’ll admit it- skinny- but not THAT badly. As in, not badly enough to not indulge in the foods I love every chance I get. Yes, I know eating “clean” is so good for you- but who wants to be the girl eating kale when you can be the one throwing back martinis and porterhouse, medium rare?

In a moment of self-realization a few months ago, it came to me that the reason I am not motivated to clean up my diet is because I honestly don’t take notice of how my body feels when I eat crappy foods. I just go on about my day at mach speed trying to get everything done, never taking a minute to think, hmm, maybe the reason I feel cranky/sluggish/anxious or my skin looks dull/dry/icky is because of what I am putting in my body.

So, in an effort to see how the healthy half lives, I decided to try a cleanse and actually take notice of how it made me feel. The hope being that after three days I would feel so good that I wouldn’t be able to help but be concerned about eating clean from here on out. I went online, signed up for the Organic Avenue LOVE Fast cleanse, cancelled all my social plans for the duration, and started psyching myself up for the experiment. Err, I mean, experience.

Now that I have completed my mission- here are my thoughts:

  • My skin looks significantly better.
  • My go-to shorts fit significantly looser- which is what I go on since I rarely weigh myself.
  • The LOVE Fast option had great variety, but for the most part, I couldn’t stomach the foods- so thinking if/when I do Organic Avenue again, will go juice only. It was nice to have something to chew around 5pm though.
  • Highlights: Orange Juice, Pear Juice, Green Embrace Smoothie, Chocolate LOVE Smoothie and Master Tonic and most of all, the Gazpacho Soup.
  • Lowlights: Anything that involved chewing. And the Cholorphyll shots, although they were so quick, they were relatively painless, despite the plant-y aftertaste.
  • Also of note, the emails that they send the night before are great- informative about not only the reason for each ingredient in each meal, but they also give you a good layout of how you should time each juice, so you really are eating throughout the day. By Day 3 I felt hungry, but at that point, it almost felt like a badge of honor for sticking with the program.
  • Did I feel better? Hard to say. I think I did. But I also don’t know if there was some sort of placebo effect involved with the fact that I am a VERY competitive person and was determined to ace this cleanse with some semblance of grace and enthusiasm.

Would I do this again? Absolutely. Even if just for the excuse to duck out of any social obligations for a few days and re-emerge with stellar (and I mean stellar) skin. And having a little extra breathing room in my jeans is nothing to shake a vegan stick at, either.

Have you ever done a cleanse? What kind? Please share, because  I am totally up for experimenting with something different next time- always up for a challenge.

I Clearly Had to Try This: Plush Puffs Marshmallow Cake

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

I was on Abe’s Market the other day perusing the natural beauty offerings (they have some amazing finds on there- if you haven’t checked it out, I highly recommend), and a pop-up appeared, enticing me with my own personal kryptonite- marshmallows. I LOVE marshmallows. Like, a lot. And typically I feel that the less a marshmallow costs, the better it tastes. I will take a $3 bag of Jet Puffed over fancy gourmet ones any day. But this particular Plush Puffs marshmallow made me second guess my ways, because, well- it was HUGE. Two pounds, to be exact. So maybe when you amortize the cost($28) over the amount of mallow- it could be on par with my mathematic marshmallow quality equation.

Billing itself as a Marshmallow Cake, I clearly had to try it. Immediately. So, I sent one to myself at the office. Jury is still out on whether this is as sad as being the girl who sends herself roses at the office- but my intention was pure- I simply had to taste this thing. They were out of my first choice- Vanilla- so I settled for Caramel. It arrive bundled up in a cellophane wrap which I promptly tore through. Cutting it wasn’t so easy- it actually ended up being much easier to maneuver on the second day, when it had hardened just enough. But it was delicious. Completely and totally delicious. A little on the sweet side- but hey, it is billed as a cake, so I can’t hate on it for that.

So yes, I was the pregnant girl sitting at her desk with a fistful of marshmallow in hand, like a scene out of some bad chick flick. But I can’t claim to be a true marshmallow maven if I don’t take my market research seriously, right? And now, when I am in need of a fun gift for that hard to shop for person, I know exactly where to turn.

My Two Cents: KIND Snacks Minis are Insanely Good

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Portion control is not my strong suit. Especially when it comes to something as damn good as a KIND bar. Hence, I am convinced that the new KIND minis were made for me. Or at the very least, people like me.

I am by no means a super healthy eater (I wish I was, but it just isn’t in my DNA) however pulling one of these out of my bag makes me feel like maybe, just maybe, I am fooling everyone. And I have always been a huge proponent of the “fake it til you make it” school of success.

Around 100 calories each and really quite satisfying (which says a lot considering I am four months pregnant and known to have an appetite the size of a pro football player anyway), I have to give these little guys a shout out. Because if you are trying to do the whole healthy thing part time at least- a full size bar is not ideal. Because let’s not kid ourselves- we are probably still going to enjoy a real meal soon after.

What are your favorite healthy snack bars? Do tell- I am always looking for new one to add to my arsenal.

A Favorite Food Find: ABC Kitchen

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Today was insanity- I am prepping for 2 big segments- CBS Early Show on Friday and Weekend Today Show on Sunday- so I didn’t have as much time to think about the post of the day as I would have liked.  But I did find time to do lots of day dreaming about the delicious dinner I am about to go enjoy at my new favorite restaurant- ABC Kitchen. I am meeting my cousin there for din in about 20 minutes, and can’t wait to devour the Peekytoe Crab Toast, Crudite platter (I know that sounds boring, but with all fresh green market veggies, it is anything but) and this delicious pasta with meatball situation.  This semi-new spot is Jean-George Vongerichten’s organic farm-to-table concept, and I have been about 15 times since I discovered it 4 months ago. It is that good. (And, I tend to get a little obsessive when I find a new spot with good food and comfy ambiance- this is off the charts on both accounts.)

ABC Kitchen is the perfect place to dine when you kinda want to be healthy- the menu is light and diverse and perfect for sharing so you can try a lot, even if you are just going with one other person. The decor is gorgeous- love the mismatched antique china and mirrored accents- exactly what I would want my home to look like if I had that “Chic Suzy Homemaker” gene in me (which, sadly, I definitely do not.)

So, off I go- hope you all had a great start to the week, and next time you are in NYC and want to try one of my favorite spots, give ABC Kitchen a call.

Somehow, I Got Really Into Tea…

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Sort of like how somehow I got really into yoga. I never fancied myself the type- but here I am, at 31 years old, yoga mat leaned up against my desk, cup of tea next to my laptop.

I am still an obsessive multi-tasker though, as is evidenced by my choice of tea. For at home sipping, I love Yogi Organic Teas because they have a purpose. Green Tea Energy to wake up in the morning, Kombucha when I fear a cold is coming on, Ginger after going overboard on Friday Night Pizza Night (my favorite Falik family tradition which you will surely be hearing more about), and so on.

Whenever I have breakfast with a beauty editor, I note that they almost categorically opt for tea over coffee. Hey, if it is good enough for them…

Oh- and if you ever find yourself in Madison Square Park- check out Subtletea. It is the most adorable neighborhood spot and they have a Blueberry Acai Energy Smoothie that is infused with green tea and absolutely delicious.

So, I may be a tea drinking yogi, but don’t expect to see me going Vegan anytime soon. Tofu always has, and always will, scare me.
