Baby Style: Six Store Bought Saviors

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Today, Alexa is six months old- and we have both come a long way since January 7. She went from a quiet sleeping preemie to a giddy giggling infant. Me? I like to think that I went from a petrified new parent to a kind of confident and semi competent mom.

This declaration of semi-competence makes me feel okay about sharing some of my new mom must-haves- starting with the six store-bought saviors that I don’t think I would have stayed sane so far without.

And other moms out there- do me a favor and leave a comment sharing your favorite finds. Trust me, I can use all the help I can get!

Scrunch Bottle Bib- So so simple but so so genius- Brian and I won’t feed Alexa a bottle without one of these. Velcro the $8 “bib” around the neck of the bottle, tuck the soft towel under  your baby’s chin, and it will catch any stray spills and dribbles before you ruin yet another freshly washed outfit. Infinitely easier and more effective then a big ol’ bib.

Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier- I admit- at first, I was completely anti-Bjorn. Something about toting my baby around town in one of these made me feel like I was one step away from mom jeans and carrying snacks in Ziploc baggies. But especially if you have a baby AND a dog, you need this.  I have become a pro at slipping Alexa in, clipping Norman’s leash on his collar, and being out the door for a morning walk in 30 seconds flat. And clearly, Alexa is quite comfortable in it- as you can see above.

Bright Starts Tug Tunes- I have no idea why Alexa adores this toy so much, but it is guaranteed to distract her from whatever she seems inclined to start crying about.  I love that it is easy to hook onto anything- her stroller, her play mat, our diaper bag- and the song it plays is quick and painless. Full disclosure- I made up a little jig to go along with the beat. When you hear something 100 times a day, you can’t help it.

Kicky Pants Onesies- Alexa is squirmy. Getting her dressed can be an exercise in patience- so the stretchier the clothing, the better.  The bamboo clothing from Kicky Pants is soft and stretchy, easy for me to pull on and off even when she is flailing like a crazy lady. They hold up well even when washed daily, and the designs are modern and, dare I say, sophisticated- a welcome change from teddy bears, sheep and lady bugs.

Diapers.com- I have said it before, and I will say it again- if Diapers.com ran the United States, we would be the MOST efficient country on the planet. Not only do they carry everything, but I am convinced they have special passageways underground that little Diapers.com elves scamper through in order to deliver formula, diapers and such at mach speed.

Binkie Bungee- I wake up in cold sweats after nightmares that find me in a public place- be it a park, a plane, a store- without a spare pacifier. Thankfully, with this clip, I don’t have to stress anymore because the pacifier that we leave the house with is the only one we need. Plus, I tend to be flustered enough as it is, so the last thing I need when Alexa is screaming bloody murder is to be frantically searching the premises for a pacifier gone AWOL.

Baby Style: Socks, Socks and More Socks

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Hi, my name is Jenn. And I am addicted to baby socks that look like shoes. I can’t help myself. And the discovery of KidsSocks.com really does not help my condition.

I am currently jonesing for as many  Trumpettes as Alexa’s feet can handle. They seem to be the gold standard of baby socks that look like shoes- and with all the adorable styles, I can certainly see why. I mean, the Mary Janes were one thing (someone sent me those when she was born)- but the ballet slipper flats? Lace up pointe shoes? High top sneakers? Seriously? Soon I am going to have to build a new closet simply for Alexa’s freaking socks.

KidsSocks.com has the largest selection of-  yes, you guessed it- kids socks on the web, and they offer free shipping every day. Free shipping gets me every time- turning my typically rational online shopping habit into a hoarding-esque experience.

Kinda wishing they made sock-shoe hybrids for adults. I could totally get into that.

Baby Style: The Search for the Ultimate Birth Announcement

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

I never really understood the point of birth announcements. I mean, especially in the age of social media- I would get them in the mail and think to myself- I know your kid was born. I saw it on Facebook. I saw it on Twitter. And I got all your Picasa photo albums. And my fridge isn’t magnetized, so what exactly am I supposed to do with this thing?

And then- as with so many other things I pre-judged before actually having a birth to announce- it came time for me to make the “to announce or not to announce” call, and I found myself feverishly scouring the internet for the perfect card to capture little Alexa. I didn’t want pink, I didn’t want storks. I wanted something that felt modern and reflected the look of her nursery- all about a cohesive theme, must be the publicist in me.

With a little help (okay, a lot of help) from the amazing team at tinyprints, I found just the one. They did some tweaks to customize it in the color palette of my choosing, and even addressed all the envelopes AND created perfectly coordinated return address labels that I will probably use on every piece of mail I send for the rest of my life.

The fact that one of my close friends, Ana, also happens to be the best kids photographer (check out her site here) and took this great picture for us didn’t hurt either. Hopefully when Alexa gets older she won’t curse me for sending out nudie photos of her to about 300 of my closest friends and family and subsequently posting on my blog for all to see. But hey- we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Lesson learned? Birth announcements are classic and important keepsakes that now I totally get. And with the prevalence of social media and email, the statement an actual piece of mail makes is a stronger one than ever.

So there.

Baby Style: Scentsy Buddy

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

As a brand new member of the mom demographic (just typing that kind of creeps me out, but anyway…) I am constantly on the lookout for anything and everything I can get my hands on to make Alexa happy and my life easier in the process. And consistently I am amazed at how unique many of the offerings in this category are.

In some cases, “unique” is polite code speak for  ridiculous, but in most cases, “unique” means just that- unique. And actual problem solvers- a quality that  have learned is crucial to a product’s success in the mom/baby market. There are very few strictly frivolous purchases- new moms have needs, and they are not going to buy something that isn’t going to fulfill them. Lets just say my beloved Brian Atwood Maniacs wouldn’t always have a wait list if they were carried in Buy Buy Baby.

Scentsy has these adorable Scentsy Buddy toys that are true problem solvers. The problem? A not-so-stellar smelling changing table. The solution? These adorably soft and cuddly stuffed animals that hold the yummy fragranced Scentsy pouch of your choice inside.  Lenny the Lamb, pictured below, is perched in the corner of Alexa’s changing table, leaning casually up against the wall, nonchalantly filling the room with the subtle and clean Newborn Nursery scent.

Think of it as a luxe scented candle for the under 5 set.

New Obsession- Tiny Prints Stationery

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

I think I am the USPS’s best customer right now- between thank you notes and birth announcements, I actually have a callus on my right middle finger from writing so much.  But I have to admit, the feeling of putting an actual piece of mail in the mailbox as opposed to hitting send on an email is pretty amazing. I always wanted to be one of those women known for thoughtful handwritten notes. They always seem so together and fabulous.

Well, I can’t promise that this whole handwritten note thing will last forever, but I kind of want it to just as an excuse to order tons of stationery from tiny prints.

Check out the cards I made on the site for Alexa- perfectly youthful without being babyish, right?

Baby Style: Super Soft Estella Bamboo Onesie

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

For some reason, when I found out I was having a girl, I got into this very “anti-girly” phase. Which is funny because I have always been such a girly girl, but in recent years, started to get a little nauseated by it all. Call it “bow burnout” if you will.

Her nursery doesn’t have a stitch of pink in it, but when it comes to dressing her, I have learned that pink is virtually impossible to avoid. And since she received this Estella Bamboo Onesie as a gift from my friend Lisette (who always knows the coolest everything), Alexa has been wearing pink regularly because I am obsessed with this thing. It is so soft and subtly chic- if that makes sense at all when referring to clothing for a one month old.

I went onto Estella’s website and they have tons of options in the same yummy bamboo material. I kind of want to buy 20 onesies and cut them up and have them re-sewn together into a giant onesie that I can wear around the house on a daily basis. Although I think that would scare my husband.
