As Seen on TV: Live with Regis & Kelly Little Black Dress Segment

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010
Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Hopefully you caught my segment on Live with Regis & Kelly this morning all about finding the perfect little black dress for your body type.  It was such a fun one to put together because it gave me an excuse to spend an entire weekend shopping for LBD’s and then I got to test my fashion expertise as I met with each model to see if my LBD guess met their personal LBD standards. And guess what? I scored 100%- I am kinda proud of myself.

Oh- and in the process I picked up an amazing LBD for myself from Rosie Pope Maternity- after all, I couldn’t do a whole segment on the PERFECT dress and show up wearing something mediocre, right?

For details on the dresses featured in the segment and tips on what styles to look for- read on…

I Gave In: Ankle Booties AND Wedges

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

I resisted the ankle bootie for a few seasons now- and for even longer than that, I have maintained my defiance against the wedge. Now, look at me- firs t new pair of shoes out of the gate for Fall 2010 is a wedge style ankle bootie.

But let me explain why this particular DKNY Aura Suede Wedge is simply so exceptional:

1- They are low-cut, meaning they dip below the ankle and therefore actually make my legs look longer, as opposed to cut off right below the calf. I can use every inch (illusion or not) that I can get.

2- The wedge is slim, not chunky and bulky, so on the foot it has the same effect as a stiletto heel would- and I love me some stilettos.

If you want to take the plunge, I suggest giving these a try. Hey, if I can do it…

Maternity Style: La Prairie Pre-Natal Massage- Nice.

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

In my book, there are few things more decadent than a massage. So when I was invited up to La Prairie at the Ritz Carlton on Central Park South for one, I at first thought- I couldn’t POSSIBLY have time, there is no way I am going to be able to go. Then, I thought about all the amazing benefits of massage- pre-natal massage in particular- and figured- what the heck- I am making a human in my belly right now, I can allow myself this little luxury, right? So I went on Tuesday evening and it was pretty damn phenomenal.

The spa is so beautiful- has a very “Old New York” feel to it but not in a stodgy way- more in a “My life is fancy and fabulous and calm” way. And they have a music list with everything from Mozart to Jack Johnson- love that. I am not one for Pachelbel’s cannon, so being able to infuse some pop in my pampering was a huge plus.  My massage therapist David could not have been nicer- sometimes I feel weird with male masseuses, but he made me completely comfortable. And helped to hoist me into this great pre-natal pillow situation that they have so I could lay face down and get all the knots worked out of my lower back.

So, pregnant or not- if you are in NYC and feel like treating yourself to some classic R & R- check out the La Praire Spa. I have a good feeling you will love it as much I did.

Maternity Style: Rosie Pope Dress

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

I am madly in love with Rosie Pope. For me to trek to up to 91st and Madison for anything, I must. So while typically an expanding belly would make me cranky, when I woke up on Thursday morning and noticed a little extra junk in the front, I was thrilled. It meant I could finally break out this dress which I bought on my first pilgrimage up there a few weeks ago. I love the bracelet-length sleeves- so decided to pile on some bangles as my main accessory.

The shade of purple is rich and gorgeous, and the rosettes along the neckline dress it up just enough. I paired it with my new SPANX Assets maternity leggings and my trusty brown Gucci boots that I snagged on sale at Bergdorf Goodman about 3 years ago and love dearly to this day.

In this photo I am down in Tribeca where I styled bloggers, producers and editors  in the new FitFlop Fall/Winter styles as the brand previewed the latest collection to the media. A few minutes after this picture was taken, I traded on my 4 inch heels for FitFlop Mukluks and not gonna lie- as much as I adore a good heel, the night was significantly more pleasant in my FitFlops.

Love It: Nars Laguna Bronzer

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I have read about a million times in my favorite magazines. Heard countless celebs rave about it’s merits. Makeup artists have used it on me and I have loved the results. But until this morning, I never had a Nars Laguna bronzer in my possession. Now that I do, I don’t really know how I ever gone my bronze on without it.

The color is amazing. Tawny perfection in a giant pan (so I can dip my oversized Sonia Kashuk brush in there and no bristle goes un-powdered)- there is not a shred of shimmer in sight. Meaning it looks gorgeously natural. I am smitten. Have you guys tried?

Maternity Stye: Nuka Maternity, Leggings & Flats = Weekend Perfection

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Agreed- the hair and makeup are not quite up to par with past posts- but hey, it was a lazy Sunday so cut me some slack. The main reason I feel compelled to post this picture is because of the shirt I am wearing, which is the most perfect fitting maternity shirt I have put on so far.

From Nuka Maternity, it is double layered, perfectly textured and nice and long without being drapey. There is a semi-deep v-neck which borderlines on revealing, but in my opinion, as long as this whole pregnancy is giving me,a, well, ample bust- I may as well kinda show it off, right?

Beauty BFF Viewer Q & A: Foundation Recommendation

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Q: My question is regarding foundations. I would like to find a decent foundation that isn’t oily and applies well…what is your recommendation under $20? Also how do I go about purchasing foundation online if that is the only place I can purchase a certain product from?

A: You are in luck- there are so many great foundations available at the drugstore (or online at sites like drugstore.com- which has a 100% color guarantee return policy on  makeup, so you don’t have to stress about selecting the wrong shade.) Based on your criteria- something that isn’t oily and applies well- here are a few that I would suggest, depending on the amount of coverage you are hoping for:

1- Full/Medium Coverage: Covergirl/Olay Simply Ageless Foundation & L’Oreal Paris True Match Roller Foundation are my 2 favorites right now because they are easy to apply precisely and can be layered to achieve the level of coverage desired on any given day. Plus, if you want to use the foundation as a concealer, you can just dip your fingertip or a concealer brush in and one product does doubly duty.

An added bonus with the L’Oreal Paris option is that the roller applicator is very easy on the skin- you don’t have to pull or tug, which in the long run is better for your skin. Also, it makes it easy to get into those easy-to-miss spots (like the sides of the nose or fine lines that may occur around the eyes) so you are truly left with an even canvas on which to sprinkle bronzer, blush, highlighter- whatever you wish.

2- Sheer Coverage: Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30 is new and so great- it rivals the more expensive tinted formulas that are beloved from prestige brands. I was very impressed, I must say. I recommend applying over a primer if you want to guarantee a nice, even coverage- but for a quick weekend “no-makeup-but-still-pretty-damn-good” face, this is perfect.

Maternity Style: Thread Social Dress

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Thread Social is one of my all-time favorite brands- and this dress that I am wearing is destined to be my maternity go-to- although as the belly gets bigger, tights or leggings will likely be necessary. Notice the giant bow on the shoulder.  I have a thing for bows- my wedding 5 years ago had a whole bow theme, actually. It sort of embodies my girly-girl style- and as my style evolves- so do the bows. Hence this one is kind of haphazard and drapey- a little more laid back than the giant purple perfectly tied one wrapped around my Monique Lhuillier dress as I walked down the aisle.

Paired it with my sky-high Louboutins that I got at the most recent sample sale (yes, lucky me, I know.) I am learning- the bigger the belly, the higher the heel. Practical? Perhaps not. But I never claimed to be practical.

Went minimal with accessories- since I like to make it all about the bow. Diamond studs, which I know you can’t see here, and my most favorite accessory of all- a couple clip in hair extensions.  To date, I think this is one of my favorites. Now I challenge myself to style it differently so I can wear it again and impress you with my versatility :)

Gotta Try It: Somme Institute Skincare

Friday, September 17th, 2010

In general, I like systems. They are simple, structured, orderly. And since my life lately can tend to be anything but, I find them quite comforting. Historically however I have had this thing against skincare systems. Someone telling me I needed to use a whole bunch of products all from the same brand felt a little pushy to me. So when I was first contacted about the Somme Institute system, I was skeptical. I ignored a whole bunch of emails- and then I went to an amazing spa for a facial and there, front and center, was an array of Somme products.

Playing dumb, I asked the owner of the spa what she thought of the brand, and, well, the floodgates opened. She raved. And raved. And raved some more. Said the cleanser was the most amazing she had ever used, and that all the products together really did deliver impressive results.

So, I finally decided to give them a try. And so glad I did. Abiding by a step-by-step regimen really was much easier than I anticipated, and the fact that Somme has great travel packs helped me stick to it as well. My favorite  by far are the Transport pads- even when I go off-system to test something new I still have a tendency to sneak those in. Soft cotton pads infused with MDT5 and AHA exfoliate dead cells on the skin’s surface, unclogging blocked pores while delivering highly-engineered vitamins to boost resiliency, hydration and encouraging cell renewal.

The Somme system really does cover all the skincare concern bases- aging, breakouts, uneven skin tone. If your skin is on the fritz, I highly recommend giving it a chance. I am happy I did, if that counts for anything.
