I Love Anything that Helps Maximize a Manicure…

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Because I am very impatient. I get so antsy sitting around waiting to dry, reading old magazines and literally staring at the lights on top of the dryer as they click the minutes gone by. I steer clear of bright colors (as much as I may want them) for this reason- I just can’t take the risk of a premature chip that sends me right back into the chair again.   But, I have found a way to max out the life of my manicure- and this blessing comes in the form of the new It Cosmetics Nail Love Nail & Cuticle Pen.

Packed with hydrolyzed collagen, healing eucalyptus oil, Vitamins A, C and E, Pro-Vitamin B5, Sweet Almond Oil and Jojoba seed Oil- I brush this onto my cuticles every morning and every evening. I have even been known to squeeze a third application in while stuck in the back of a cab sitting in traffic. It is kind of addictive. Massaging it onto the nail somehow keeps polish from chipping and keeps cuticles from getting all ragged looking.

Throw on a Blazer, You Have the Perfect Dress for the Office…

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I always feared strapless dresses- that is, until Shoshanna came around. We all know that she has a knack for dressing those of us with, well, curves- and this dress is the most perfect example of her skill.  Florals are a huge trend for Summer- but I am wary of the ones that look too Laura Ashley-esque. Which is why I adore the fact that this pattern is set on black, and the thick elastic waist band has an edgy feel to it (although I kinda want to put my skinny J. Crew black belt with gold stud details around it next time I sport the ensemble).

I wore it for an LX TV segment yesterday and when watching the clip back, I actually liked the dress even more.  Usually, after I see myself in something on TV, it gets relegated to the back of my closet.

The Mascara of The Month (or, several months and counting)…

Monday, June 28th, 2010

I have this theory on drugstore mascara. My theory is that it is actually significantly more costly than department store brands. Because if you are a drugstore mascara person, then every time you walk into the drugstore and you are bombarded by posters and giant promotional end-of-aisle build outs for the newest must-have mascara breakthrough you question the one you own and inevitably spend $10-plus to get the new miracle lash potion being thrown in your face. The combination of the frequency with which we tend to visit our local drugstore and the seemingly constant launch roll out of new mascaras- I venture to say one could buy $40 worth of mascara in a couple months- whereas if you go with a department store investment, you stick with it and actually save.

Anyway- the point of all this is- I found a way to defy my own theory, and I called it L’Oreal Voluminous.

I May Be Melting, But At Least This Isn't…

Friday, June 25th, 2010

NYC is sticky right now. Unfortunately, my schedule has no mercy on my sweat-prone self so even though it is 90+ degrees outside, I still have meetings and segments and need to look somewhat put together. In summer months I give myself a little lee-way, just because I really do dislike the heat and probably should pack up and move to Maine at some point. Mmmm, lobster. Anyway- I digress…

So, as I mentioned- I am sweaty. Which means my makeup melts off my face almost the second I step out the door. This has gotten worse with age for some reason- I think a combo of my skin eating product, and product slip sliding away. But the one thing in my makeup bag that truly defies these odds is Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin. I fell in love with it over breakfast with the PR Director of Sephora who was wearing it at the time- I literally ran from breakfast to get my own bottle.

It is this perfect creamy gold shimmer that doesn’t crease or melt. With all my access to products, I have worn the same lid combo for like 10 years- Shiseido HydroPowder in Gold with Stila Kitten on top. Now, I switch out the Shiseido for Urban Decay and still get that same light, rose gold effect. It just lasts longer.

Somehow, I Got Really Into Tea…

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Sort of like how somehow I got really into yoga. I never fancied myself the type- but here I am, at 31 years old, yoga mat leaned up against my desk, cup of tea next to my laptop.

I am still an obsessive multi-tasker though, as is evidenced by my choice of tea. For at home sipping, I love Yogi Organic Teas because they have a purpose. Green Tea Energy to wake up in the morning, Kombucha when I fear a cold is coming on, Ginger after going overboard on Friday Night Pizza Night (my favorite Falik family tradition which you will surely be hearing more about), and so on.

Whenever I have breakfast with a beauty editor, I note that they almost categorically opt for tea over coffee. Hey, if it is good enough for them…

Oh- and if you ever find yourself in Madison Square Park- check out Subtletea. It is the most adorable neighborhood spot and they have a Blueberry Acai Energy Smoothie that is infused with green tea and absolutely delicious.

So, I may be a tea drinking yogi, but don’t expect to see me going Vegan anytime soon. Tofu always has, and always will, scare me.

Closet MVP- Dannijo.

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

We are in the process of renovating our bedroom and closet, so I had to pack up 95% of my clothes while this all goes down. Packing for a weekend trip is enough to send me into a tailspin, so one can easily imagine the panic that set in when my husband told me to select a few choice things to wear for the next 2 weeks. Heart palpitations ensued- I got all huffy and cranky, and ran around our 2X2 foot closet like a chicken with my head cut off for a good 30 minutes.

Then, I took a breath, and remembered my travel mantra- accessories, accessories and a few more accessories. Trina makeup bag in hand (using it for jewelry this week since my bathroom can stay in tact- yay for an easy makeup routine), one by one I started placing my Dannijo necklaces inside.

The Amal:

The Covina:

The Maverick:

I could go on for pages to be honest- but the bottom line is this: Once these babies were given the green light to be part of my 2 weeks worth of fashion stash, all I really needed to pack clothing-wise were basics- black dresses, white tees and my beloved J Brands, J. Crew skirts, Yummie Tummie tanks and my Current/Elliott jean jacket. And I don’t wake up in the morning in a cold sweat nervous that “perfect” outfit is in some storage facility in Long Island City. It really is just a Dannijo necklace away.

Big Event- I Finished This Product to The Last Drop This Morning

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

When it comes to products, the ultimate compliment I can deliver is finishing one completely. It rarely happens to be honest. I am lucky that I receive so many things to try, which means go-to favorites are constantly being replaced.  But this morning, I squeezed the very last drop out of my Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint in Golden. It has slightly more coverage than most tinted moisturizers- which is a good thing. And, the SPF 20 doesn’t hurt either. It makes my skin glowy without being shiny and evens out those pesky little red splotches I seem to be prone to as of late.

I also appreciate when I feel like a product really KNOWS me,  you know? Like, gets my lifestyle and adapts accordingly? And when Jouer launched a collection of mini “LMTs” (the in-the-know nickname for the moisture tints) I heard birds singing in the back of my beauty-obsessed brain. They come 4 to a set- one for my gym makeup bag, one for my desk drawer, and 2 for my summer travel stable. Foundation minis typically disappoint- too little product to work with, dinky packaging that leaks, etc.  But these? Pure perfection.

Oh- and not to mention that the founder, Christina Zilber, is one of the most gorgeous, stylish and yes, kind, women I have ever had the pleasure to work with.  I kind of want to be her.

The Dress I Can't Seem to Wear Enough Lately…

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

I was recently introduced to the wonder that is Jay Godfrey. Every single one of his dresses fits perfectly- just body-con enough to be wearable for work or play, not one stitch at the hands of a tailor needed.

My favorite- probably because I never thought I would be able to wear one shoulder (too broad, too busty-the usual figure cop-outs) is the one pictured above. I have it in purple- and wear it with these amazing nude Jimmy Choos that I stalked down on a recent visit to the Houston Galleria.  I wore it the other night to the YSL Belle Opium launch party and got tons of compliments- something about bright purple and a poufy skirt that gets noticed, I guess.

Because I Eat my Lipstick…

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

One of my favorite things about booking big segments is that I have an excuse to call in my friend Emily, who happens to be the most amazing makeup artist and hairstylist. She also is not afraid to call me out on some of my bad beauty habits. Namely, the fact that I eat my lip color. When she came by to make me up for my recent E! News style segment, she was very excited to use her recent find from The Makeup Show- Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar.

Firstly- love the name. Just when you think you have heard it all. Secondly- even I, she with the insatiable appetite for lip product, can’t make this disappear. You have to be super precise with application- I recommend using a skinny lip brush to paint it on. My favorite shade is Pageant- a bold, deep pink. For a more neutral lip, I get creative and blend Petty Beige with Melange.

And once it is on, it is ON. And it is amazing.

Welcome to my NEW Blog- Promise to keep up with it this time…

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

So, I know- you have no reason at this point to trust me when I tell you that this time I really am going to be diligent about updating my blog. But I really am. I promise. I have a new design that I love, and so many things that I want to share with you guys- from favorite finds I discover as I prep for segments (and a behind the scenes look at how my segments come together in the first place) to must-haves that save me daily when I find myself suffering a style emergency.

This whole blogging thing will be a work in progress- I am still up in the air about the angle I want to go at it from- so any and all suggestions are so welcome. What do you think would be most interesting? Product reviews? Day-in-the-life/behind the scenes type stuff?  Giveaways? Profiles of the favorite finds of the superbly stylish people that I get to spend time with in the fashion, beauty, media and pr worlds? Pictures and stories about my beloved dog, Norman? (Personally, I would vote for the latter- Norman is freaking ADORABLE and regardless of what you guys say, I will likely still have to post pics of his adorable face every now and then.)

Anyway- WELCOME and thank you so much for all your support over the years. I still kinda pinch myself when I see that this whole style and beauty expert thing actually happened- who knew? I am forever grateful…
